What is Protocol?

PROTOCOL

A standard way of communicating across a network or internet. A protocol like “language” of computer network. A method by which two difference systems can communicate together. 

What are Protocol functions?

  • Handshaking 
  • Type of error checking
  • Data Compression Method
  • How to format a message
  • How to indicate that it has finished sending / receiving a message
  • Termination of the session or connection

Common Protocols

  • TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol)
  • HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
  • TELNET (Telnet Remote Protocol)
  • POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)
  • SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
  • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
