Tune up Windows Vista with Virtual-Memory

Normally people when need to upgrade computer, almost need to buy more Physical RAM.  In fact Windows does not use only RAM to process your job.

Windows Page File

Windows create a hidden file on your primary hard disk and use file to swap pages of data out of physical memory. The “swap” call a page file.  (Page file located in on root folder “C:\Pagefile.sys”)

In a default of Windows installation, Windows will create page file in the root folder same as Windows system files.  The default size is

  • Minimum 1.5 times of phisical RAM  (Sample if you installed 1 GB RAM, the page file should be 1.5 GB)
  • Maximum 3 times of phisical RAM  (Sample if you installed 1 GB RAM, the page file should be 3 GB)

How to set Virtual-Memory in Windows Vista?

  1. Click “Start”, then click “Control Panel”
  2. Click “System and Maintenance”
  3. Click “Performance Information and Tools” then click “Advanced Tools”
  4. Click “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”
  5. Answering the User Account Control promot
  6. Click “Advanced” tab, then click “Change”
  7. Clear “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”
  8. Virtual-Memory

  9. Change size as need by click “Custom size” so you can specify an initial size and a maximum size.
